This collection of photographs was created by the graduates of the Through Our Lens photography workshop in partnership with the Women’s Resource Center. Throughout this program, participants have learned digital camera techniques and have applied their skills to documenting the lives and stories of Cambodian women. Our artists invite us into their homes and communities and offer an intimate glimpse of the vital and varied roles that women play in Cambodian society.

MEET THE THROUGH OUR LENS MEDIA TEAM!
SOPHAL KEN
Women's Resource Center Legal Aid Advisor and Through Our Lens Co-Facilitator "I am very happy to be part of the PhotoForward partnership with Women’s Resource Center and to co-facilitate our workshops. It is an important project that provides the power of new technologies to women in the community, and through this program we can learn new skills and share our stories with the world." |
SAROUT ANN
PhotoForward Program Assistant "This is the first time I have done this kind of work, and I was so shy at first. Now I am more confident, and this opportunity has changed everything in my life for the better. I hope all girls in Cambodia can go to school, have a good job and be independent. It is important that women have the same freedom as men." |
BOU SOKCHEA
TOL Media Maker and Student at Build Bright University “I hope girls in Cambodia to have the same rights as men. The part of this project that made me most excited was learning about the experiences of women in my life. Before I interviewed them, I didn't know about women’s struggles, but this project helped me to know more and it has make us closer than we were before.” |
SREYNA HAS
TOL Media Maker and Student at Build Bright University “I want women in Cambodia to have access to knowledge about their rights. I want to see an end to domestic violence and for women to have the same rights as men. If Cambodian women have a voice in their communities they can drive development.” |
MEAN KONTHEA
TOL Media Maker and Assistant Program Manager at Journeys Within Our Community “It was the first time to learn a new skill and I learned about the other participants, about their life experience - if their life was easy or hard - and about their problems. In my group I felt that I could help the other participants. Because I was more educated than other participants I was able to help them. Also I can pass on the new knowledge to my subordinate staff. Now I have more knowledge so I can share it with other people.” |
RONG SAMNANG
TOL Media Maker and Parent Participant at Green Gecko “I want Cambodian women to learn about their health and hygiene and how to tell their stories through photographs and interviews. This project helps us to learn and teach about women's lives. I would like the people in the countryside to learn what I have learned so they can be healthier and more informed.” |
TEAR SREYMOM
TOL Media Maker and Cook at Green Gecko “I think it is good for girls to have an education. It helps girls to have equal rights as boys. Before we learned from the older generation and thought girls could only stay in the kitchen. If they went to school for a long time we thought “they can't use it because they will just stay in the house and do house work.” Now I think the girls have the same rights as men and we can do the same jobs the men do.” |
VERN SARUN
TOL Media Maker and Community Health Educator at CCDO "I am married and have one child. I work with women in the villages and sometimes it is difficult but other times it is easy to explain about maternal health, childcare, and parenting. I educate them about newborn nutrition, going to the doctor when they are pregnant, and where to get medical help in their village and commune."
