The amazing Scholarship Students from Journeys Within Our Community (JWOC) created their first collection of photographs during the intensive 'Introduction to Photography Workshop' offered in partnership with PhotoForward. Their images were exhibited at New Leaf Gallery in Siem Reap, Cambodia with an opening night celebration on August 23, 2015.

Through this workshop, Cambodian students learned how to use digital cameras, compose photographs, edit on the computer, and create images that tell a story. They also discussed the power that photographs and media have to shape the way we see our world. Through their images, our artists are sharing a glimpse into their lives, communities, and interests from their own perspectives and developing professional skills that they can use in their careers and pass on to the next generation.

New York, NY, USA - March 11, 2014
Event on WCA: http://wcainternationalcaucus.weebly.com/

In communities that face dire economic and social inequality, what role can a media arts program possibly play? Why does it matter? That was the subject of PhotoForward's presentation at the 2014 UN Commission on the Status of Women, "Why Photography? Engagement, Empowerment, and Action through the Arts".  The panel was part of a parallel event organized by the Women's Caucus for Art.

The presentation highlighted the work of PhotoForward partnership projects “Stitching Our Stories” (Laos PDR), “Through Our Lens” (Cambodia), and “ Sanctuary Arts” for youth in foster care (New York, USA). The presentation also included a live spoken word performance by PhotoForward alumnus, Meri Marabyan, who wrote an original poem for the event.
