OUR VIEW, OUR STORY
New Leaf Cafe & Gallery, Siem Reap, Cambodia August 2015 View the Exhibition in the OUR VIEW, OUR STORY Gallery The amazing Scholarship Students from Journeys Within Our Community (JWOC) created their first collection of photographs during the intensive 'Introduction to Photography Workshop' offered in partnership with PhotoForward. Their images were exhibited at New Leaf Gallery in Siem Reap, Cambodia with an opening night celebration on August 23, 2015.
Through this workshop, Cambodian students learned how to use digital cameras, compose photographs, edit on the computer, and create images that tell a story. They also discussed the power that photographs and media have to shape the way we see our world. Through their images, our artists are sharing a glimpse into their lives, communities, and interests from their own perspectives and developing professional skills that they can use in their careers and pass on to the next generation. |

Raffles Grand Hotel Royal Gardens, Siem Reap, Cambodia March 2015 View the Exhibition in the Through Our Lens Gallery Women's Resource Center, celebrated 2015 International Women's Day by bringing together more than a dozen Cambodian community organization for a spctacular event held at the River Garden of Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor, Siem Reap. PhotoForward celebrated the incredible achievement of our 'Through Our Lens' media team whose work explores the lives, experiences, and ambitions of modern Cambodian women. These remarkable photos, oral histories, and community research were developed through a workshop series in partnership with Women's Resource Center and using an innovative new-media platform from Map Your World during their 6-week workshop.

The films examine the changing lives of women in Laos through the lens of textile artists, craftswomen, shamans, a Hmong medicine woman and several generations of Lao women discussing childbirth and transforming traditions. Stitching Our Stories was developed through a partnership with PhotoForward and Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre, Laos and are currently featured in the TAEC museum exhibition "Culture Keepers: Stories of Women in a Changing Laos" in Luang Prabang Laos. |

Stories from Women in a Changing Laos Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre, Luang Prabang, Laos PDR October 2014 - August 2016 Visit the Culture Keepers Exhibition online The first community-curated museum exhibition in Laos opened on October 7, 2014 at the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre in Luang Prabang. The exhibit features photographs, documentary videos, oral histories, and community research by Lao women and girls in the PhotoForward/TAEC Stitching Our Stories (SOS) media programme. The exhibition highlights the work of 28 SOS participants ages 9 to 37 and offers an intimate view of the lives of women from Hmong, Tai Lue, Kmhmu, Phounoy, Tai Dam, and Tai Lao ethnic groups in Lue Northern Laos. |

UNITED NATIONS 58TH COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN
Women's Caucus for Art Panel, United Nations Headquarters New York, NY, USA - March 11, 2014 Event on WCA: http://wcainternationalcaucus.weebly.com/ In communities that face dire economic and social inequality, what role can a media arts program possibly play? Why does it matter? That was the subject of PhotoForward's presentation at the 2014 UN Commission on the Status of Women, "Why Photography? Engagement, Empowerment, and Action through the Arts". The panel was part of a parallel event organized by the Women's Caucus for Art. The presentation highlighted the work of PhotoForward partnership projects “Stitching Our Stories” (Laos PDR), “Through Our Lens” (Cambodia), and “ Sanctuary Arts” for youth in foster care (New York, USA). The presentation also included a live spoken word performance by PhotoForward alumnus, Meri Marabyan, who wrote an original poem for the event. |

The films examine the changing lives of women in Laos through the lens of textile artists, craftswomen, shamans, and a Hmong medicine woman. The film opens with a brief introduction featuring the project partners Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre and PhotoForward, and each short is prefaced with an interview with the filmmakers themselves. Their research films serve as valuable documents of ancient cultural practices with deep roots in the community’s identity as well as intimate portraits of the modern Lao women and men who have dedicated their lives to learning and refining their crafts.

BETWEEN HISTORY AND NEW HORIZONS
Photographs of Women, Work, and Community in Laos Asia Society Texas Center - Houston, Texas, USA November 2013 – February 2014 Exhibition Website: http://asiasociety.org/texas/exhibitions/betweenhistory#introduction Forty photographs created by Lao women and girls in PhotoForward's Stitching Our Stories: Community Research Project, developed in partnership with the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre (TAEC) in Luang Prabang, Laos, are featured at the Asia Society Texas Center in Houston. The exhibition opened on November 7th and was attended by more than 1,600 visitors on the first night alone! Visit the ASTC website for more information and images from the exhibit. The exhibit depicts moments in the lives of women from the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. Through their photographs, our artists invite us into their homes and communities and offer an intimate glimpse of the vital and varied roles that women play in Lao society as well as the often seismic impact that modernization is having on traditional beliefs and practices. |

At the heart of the project is the collaboration with social workers and youth development specialists to design photography-based programs that integrate art therapy and community building activities for youth at Good Shepherd Services. The program includes mentorship, leadership training, and scholarship and portfolio support for advanced arts and education programs.
